Project Overview
Initiation to launch
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carlow University wanted to commission a drone tour to show off its campus to potential students who could no longer visit in person and asked me to lead the project.
I researched and contacted several vendors and discovered one of the vendors was behind a recent viral drone video of Downtown Pittsburgh, which I’d seen on social media. Recognizing their unique capabilities, I recommended them to Carlow and began establishing the project scope, budget and timeline in conjunction with the executive director of marketing and communications.
I planned this project collaboratively by:
- Developing a shot list of about 20 locations with key stakeholders.
- Updating the marketing and communications department on timelines and developments and received input on potential project conflicts.
- Conducting a walk-through of campus with the drone pilots to discuss production logistics.
- Coordinating with university personnel to prepare indoor and outdoor spaces, communicated with the campus community to raise awareness of the project and arranged access to closed-off spaces.
Over two days of production, I provided on-site logistical and communications assistance, and creative input that aligned with the university’s goals for the project. Once a draft version of the video was ready, I reviewed it independently and with the marketing director, and communicated our feedback to the vendor. With the completed video, I coordinated the video publication with the web and social media managers. Additionally, I was responsible for organizing, keywording and archiving raw video footage for future uses.
The video remains one of the top-performing videos on the university’s YouTube channel, and clips from the project were integral in other marketing and communications collateral, including their website redesign.
